Purpose:

Start Thinking About Reducing Secondhand Smoke (STARSS) program is a non-judgmental, non-blaming approach based on harm reduction and aims to help low income mothers identify ways to protect their children from secondhand smoke. This strength-based program emphasizes the mother’s positive actions (e.g. smoking outside) and encourages self confidence in her ability to quit. Five selected Community Action Program for Children/Canada Prenatal Nutrition Programs (CAPC /CPNP) sites across Canada will be used over an eight month period to adapt and distribute STARSS materials and develop a national implementation strategy. The project will help address the high smoking rates among low income single mothers, and in particular the 45% of CPNP participants who smoke during pregnancy. Funding will address the numerous national requests for extension of the program, and assist in increasing the capacity of service providers in conducting tobacco control activities.
