The objective of the Ensemble, on D-Tox (Phase II) project is to prevent illicit drug use among youth ages 10 to 18 from the MRCs of Montmagny and L’Islet, a rural area where 50% of the schools targeted by the project are considered disadvantaged schools according to the socio-economic milieu index (Agence de la Santé et des Services sociaux de Chaudière-Appalaches, 2003). This index reflects the proportion of households where the mother does not have a diploma and the parents are unemployed. The current project targets the young people themselves as well as their families. The project uses a broad approach with the goal of increasing young people’s internal and external protection factors. It seeks to develop social skills among youth, and to increase their knowledge of illicit drugs and alternatives to drug use. The project targets families by enhancing their knowledge of illicit drug use and improving parenting skills. The project also addresses the community by enhancing knowledge there about preventing illicit drug use and encouraging community involvement in various prevention activities. Finally, counsellors are also targeted in order to equip them in drug use prevention. To achieve this, the project will offer prevention workshops for young people in class as well as the possibility of creating alternative activities to drug use, prevention and parenting skills workshops for parents, training and joint action opportunities for counsellors, and a prevention publicity campaign aimed at the overall community. Organizations in the area, including the schools, the Table de concertation jeunesse, and youth centres are fully committed to the project.
