Smoking rates are high in Newfoundland for First Nations people living off-reserve and pregnant women. The Alliance for the Control of Tobacco will develop a culturally appropriate public education campaign to help reduce tobacco use in these populations. Television, radio, cinema and print advertisements will be developed and sent throughout the province to physicians' offices and hospitals, pharmacies, healthy baby clubs, Native friendship centers and the Health Regional Offices. As well, the www.smokingsucks.ca website will be updated. Results will be measured through the Canadian Tobacco Use Monitoring Survey (CTUMS) and from data collected by the Newfoundland Center for Health Information. Funding of this project will benefit all Newfoundlanders whose health improves as they quit smoking or decide to never start smoking and could lead to a substantial long term savings to our health care system as the impact of smoking in the province is reduced.
