Purpose:

The Kids Can! Project targets students aged 10 to 12 attending the 34 elementary schools from the English Montreal School Board. The goal is to offer drug prevention services to the linguistic minority in the province of Quebec. The project will raise awareness and educate about illicit drug use and its harmful effects and improve capacities to help avoid illicit drug use. By targeting youth prior to their first exposure to these substances, the project can teach them to effectively detect and resist social pressures. By promoting capacity building and by including schools and parents in the process, this project can help strengthen the protective factors of the students, thereby inoculating them against risk. To achieve this, students will receive the Kids Can! program in school, through 6 sessions delivered in the 5th and 6th grade. A total of over 30 schools will be targeted. The program will be monitored and evaluated each year. Undergraduate students from Concordia University will be trained by Ometz to deliver the Kids Can! drug prevention curriculum in these schools. Thus, a trained cohort of professionals with experience and knowledge in drug prevention with youth will be created. The project will also be to increase access to health promotion and drug prevention information and resources for parents and schools, thus enhancing protective factors for the youth. By working in partnership with Concordia University, this project has a winning plan to deliver since it ensures that youth are targeted at a young age, prior to their first exposure to risk taking behaviour and when they are most receptive to developing healthy attitudes and coping strategies.
